City of Houston proclaims June 19 Hermann Park Japanese Garden Day

published Jul. 6, 2012

On June 19, Bellaire Mayor Annise Parker recognized local community groups and individuals for their dedication in maintaining the Japanese Garden at Hermann Park, one of Houston's most enduring symbols of friendship.

The day was proclaimed "Hermann Park Japanese Garden Day" in Houston, and was part of a centennial celebration of Japan gifting the United States 3,000 flowering cherry trees as a sign of friendship.

"For the past two decades, the Japanese Garden has served as a visible symbol of the friendship between Houston and Chiba City," said Parker, referring to Houston’s Japanese partner city. "We are truly honored to acknowledge the lasting friendship this garden personifies, with its beautiful pathways, gardens and trees."

In commemoration of this gift, and in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the Houston-Chiba City sister city relationship, 20 new cherry trees will be planted in October.

“We are delighted that Houston has been chosen as one of the cities to receive cherry blossom trees to plant on the Japan-U.S. Cherry Blossom Centennial," said Consul-General of Japan Jota Yamamoto. "This is also a wonderful opportunity to recognize with the city Mr. Minami and many other individuals and organizations that have contributed to the beauty and culture of Houston through their work on the Japanese Garden in Hermann Park.”

Trees will be planted by the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, which will help maintain the garden with assistance of community members.

"The Japanese Garden holds a special place in Hermann Park and in the heart of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department," said Joe Turner, director. "It is a masterpiece of timeless Japanese landscape art unique in our area, and we appreciate the years of tender care and attention it has received from the Houston community.”

During the June celebration, Yamamoto presented Parker with a plaque commemorating the Cherry Blossom Centennial.
