Girl Scouts receive grant from Walmart Foundation

published Aug. 1, 2012

The Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council received a $25,000 grant recently from the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program.

According to a press release, the grant will help the GSSJC expand its community outreach program by providing more than 20,000 at-risk girls in 36 schools in the greater Houston area with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The districts include Channelview, Galena Park, Houston, Pasadena and Sheldon.

"We believe Girl Scouts is for every girl, despite their socioeconomic background," GSSJC CEO Mary Vitek said in a press release. "Being a grant recipient allows us to be able to offer this unique experience to more girls living in underserved communities in the Houston area and we couldn't be more pleased."

According to the press release, the goal of the community outreach programs provided by GSSJC is to provide girls living in low-income neighborhoods with the guidance, support and skills needed to make wise decisions and achieve their full potential, so they can in turn accomplish goals and make a difference in their communities.

The Walmart Foundation's State Giving Program supports organizations with programs that align with their mission to create opportunities so people can live better, according to the press release.
