Pet safety tips for Fourth of July

Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services has issued a pet safety reminder to area residents during the Fourth of July holiday.

The loud noises and flashing lights associated with this holiday can cause pets and their owners a great deal of anxiety. The smell of sulphur can create excessive fear in pets, according to a press release.

Pets should not be included in celebrations that involve fireworks. Frightened pets may break leashes, jump fences, run away or even bite someone, including beloved family members.

The HCPHES offers these tips for a safe Fourth of July: Keep pets indoors and away from loud noises. Make sure all pets are wearing current and correct identification in case they run away. Talk to a veterinarian if your pet trembles, drools or displays other distressful behaviors. And never leave a pet in a car at any time. The inside of a car can heat up quickly and the consequences can be disastrous.
